Step 4: Learning the rhythm

Right, you’ve got the lyrics tattooed into your memory, you’ve got a feel for the sound and where you think the chord changes might occur, now it’s time to switch your attention to the rhythm of the song.

What we're aiming for is that your guitar playing needs to be automatic before you can introduce anything else into the mix. So ignore the lyrics during this part of the process, for now we are concentrating on getting your guitar playing super tight.

Sit down or stand up?

First things first, when you’re playing guitar, make sure that you’re sat down! At least until later on, when you're more confident.

Standing up at this point just gives you something else to think about, as your back starts aching, or you start pacing around the room.

Of course, if you insist on standing up and find it more relaxing, then do so. Later on when you are further down the line, if you are planning on performing on a stage, you'll need to learn to play while standing up. I did also recommend earlier in this book that when singing you should aim to stand up with good posture.

But sitting down at this point will just give you less to think about until you get the hang of playing and singing together. Then you can progress to standing up.

Whatever you choose to do, the most important thing right now is that you are COMFORTABLE. We will introduce standing up later, as part of getting you multi-tasking on auto-pilot.

First off, we’re going to pay no attention to the chords. Even if you’ve already sourced the sheet music for the song, put it to one side for a moment. We just want to get the hang of the strumming rhythm first.

Sing the strumming pattern

This might sound weird, but it's a really useful technique for familiarizing yourself with the rhythm of a song. It's how I break down songs when I'm learning them, and helps me to memorize the rhythm.

When I say 'sing the strumming pattern', it refers to verbally mimicking the rhythm of the guitar. For instance we might verbalize the guitar strumming to Songbird by Oasis into:

jun-jee jiggy-jiggy jun-jee jiggy-jiggy jun-jee

In my own head, this is how the guitar rhythm sounds. Hey, I could be wrong and it might sound differently to you, but if someone asked me to “sing” the rhythm to the song, I would sing it as the phrase above. It doesn't have to be a perfect replica at this stage.

The great thing is, you can sing this mimicked rhythm in your head whenever you are doing Step 2 - positive daydreaming and drifting off to sleep.

Furthermore, Songbird is about as easy as it gets with its simple rhythm and 3 chord sequence, and therefore is a great song to start on.
